John “Jack” Egan, longtime Partner at Egan, Flanagan and Cohen, has been honored with induction into the Mass Lawyer’s Weekly Hall of Fame. This prestigious accolade celebrates attorneys whose careers have made significant contributions to the development of the law in Massachusetts, the legal profession, and the quality of justice in the state. The induction ceremony will take place on September 17, 2024, at the Venezia Restaurant Boston, located in the heart of Boston.

With over fifty years of active practice in the Massachusetts courts, Jack Egan’s career is marked by remarkable achievements and dedication to justice. Egan has served as a trial attorney for the Mass Defenders, an Assistant District Attorney for Hampshire and Berkshire Counties, and a Special Assistant Attorney General. His civil litigation expertise has resulted in over $240 million in verdicts and settlements for his clients.

One of Egan’s notable achievements includes a $9.5 million verdict in a lease dispute in 2018, which was affirmed by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, with a final judgment ultimately exceeding $20 million. This case clarified the law on business-to-business cases. Egan also takes pride in his pro bono work, particularly in the case where he and his partner, now Superior Court Judge Edward J. McDonough, challenged the secrecy of juvenile court proceedings and advocated for the life of a child in a coma, influencing legislative changes to open such proceedings to the public.

Egan’s cases have also contributed to new law in areas such as eminent domain, employment discrimination, and First Amendment issues. He has represented nationally known celebrities in disputes in Western Massachusetts.
Egan’s verdicts and settlements are the largest in Western Massachusetts in several areas, including employment discrimination, eminent domain, personal injury, lease disputes, and products liability. He is regularly listed as a New England and Massachusetts Super Lawyer. Egan’s accolades also include being named twice to the Top Ten Lawyers in Massachusetts by Mass Lawyers Weekly, among the Top 100 Massachusetts Lawyers, and recognized as a Top Boston Lawyer.

In 1995, Egan was invited to join the American College of Trial Lawyers, which limits its membership to no more than one percent of the trial bar. In 2007, he was appointed by the Supreme Judicial Court as a Trustee of its Clients’ Security Fund. In 2010, he was appointed Vice Chairperson and in 2012, Chairperson.

Egan expressed his gratitude for the honor, stating, “Being inducted into the Mass Lawyer’s Weekly Hall of Fame is a recognition not just of my work but of the collaborative efforts of my colleagues at Egan, Flanagan and Cohen. I am deeply humbled and thankful for this acknowledgment and remain committed to the pursuit of justice and the betterment of our legal system.”

The induction of Jack Egan into the Mass Lawyer’s Weekly Hall of Fame highlights a career dedicated to excellence, integrity, and the advancement of the legal profession. As Massachusetts continues to benefit from his contributions, the legal community celebrates a legacy that will inspire future generations of attorneys.
